Our case:
My wife and I came to the UK in January, 2016 on a TIER 2 visa - I was the main applicant and my wife was my dependent.
Our visas were valid till December, 2018.
I applied for my core medical training post and started it by applying for a new TIER 2 work visa within the UK.
I discussed my wifes situation with the Home Office ( Via email- I kept the email safe and attached it with this visa application) and they advised that she did not need to change her visa and she could reside legally on her current visa.
We had a daughter in April, 2018.
We plan to go abroad in a few weeks so we decided to apply for TIER 2 dependent visas for both my wife and daughter.
They have applied for a TIER 2 dependent visa for one year ( as my visa is ending in August, 2019)
Application:
My wife filled her application using this website:
https://visas-immigration.service.gov.uk/product/pbs-dependant-partner
Once we completed it, we were asked to pay for health surcharge.
The amount was 400 GBP ( 200 GBP per dependent for "upto 3 years")
Then we were asked to pay the visa fees which was 1408 GBP ( 706 GBP per dependant for "upto 3 years")

Biometrics:
Once we had paid for the application, we received an email that we would have to go to a post office which has biometrics service and get my wifes photo, signature and fingerprints done and our baby's photo taken.
Luckily, the post office which had this service was a 10 minute walk from our accommodation.
We had some trouble getting our baby's picture taken because the biomterics machine is very particular and only accepts photographs in which the eyes are in one horizontal line and the applicant is looking in the camera. Unfortunately the machine does not take into account the fact that even an adult struggles with this.
However the post office manager was kind enough to "over ride" this and took the best picture he could ( which has pretty good - both eyes were open, not crying, nothing was visible in the background as I was holding her and was wearing a grey sheet to neutralize the background). He said that he does this all the time with babies and he learnt his lesson a few years ago when a young couple spent 4 hours trying to get an "acceptable" picture of their baby.
