My experience of applying for British Citizenship via naturalisation

As you all might be aware, my wife and I received our ILR in March, 2021.
I have shared the whole process here:
All about ILR and getting a UK citizenship - an introduction: https://omarsguidelines.blogspot.com/2021/03/all-about-ilr-and-getting-uk.html

We then decided to apply for naturalisation in March, 2022 - one year after we were granted our ILR.

2. Submit application after paying for it.
3. The UKVCAS team will email you once you have applied stating that they are going to assess your application to see if you can use the IDV app ( A phone application on which you upload all your documents, take your picture and this way do not need to attend a face to face biometrics appointment).
4. Once you get the email from the UKVCAS team that you can now download and sign-in to your IDV app, upload the necessary documents ( like you would do on the UKVCAS website online).
5. Take your pictures and then submit your application.

OUR TIMELINE:
1. Submitted application online on the 3rd of April
2. Received email to upload documents on IDV app on the 13th of April
3. Uploaded all the documents and submitted the application on the 20th of April.
4. Received an email on the 28th of September stating that there is a delay in our application process
5. Received an email on the 18th of May, 2023 that our naturalization process has been successful

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Just like our ILR application, this question was asked:

This is what came up if I answered yes

This is what came up when I answered no

After discussion with everyone, I answered no to the degree that was taught in English and answered yes to the next questions.
I used the same IELTS my wife and I had used to apply for work visas in December, 2015 and ILR in 2021.

REFEREES
These questions were asked in the online application:

In addition to this, once you have submitted your application, you will be asked to get these referee forms filled ( 2 referees per applicant) and upload them onto the UKVCAS/IDV portal

                                  DOCUMENT CHECKLIST

I was able to view the document checklist of my application once I had paid for it:

                                     IDV APP EMAILS

Once I had paid for my online application on the 3rd of April, I received this email:

At this point, I could not upload my documents anywhere and had to wait for a week. I received this email on the 13th of April:

How I uploaded these documents onto the IDV app:
I scanned  documents like passports, etc and saved them as a separate folder
I then made a folder and added all the necessary documents
I emailed all these documents to myself and then downloaded one document on my phone by opening my email and uploaded them to the IDV app.
It did not take long

Once we had uploaded all our documents, we had to do an ID verification whereby the app takes pictures. We had to upload a photograph of our travel document as well.
Once that was done, we submitted the documents to the UKVCAS team who would then forward them to the UKVI.

OUR COMMUNICATION WITH THE HOME OFFICE
EMAIL 1
I sent this email on the 25th of July, 2022 to Furthernationalityenquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk:
Hello,
My wife and I applied for our natulisation this year and submitted our documents via the IDV application on the 20th of April, 2022.
I have attached a screenshot from the IDV application and an email from the UKVCAS confirming that our application and documents were submitted to the UKVI.
Unfortunately, we have not heard back since.
Can you kindly look into this please?
Many thanks,
Dr ******* - main applicant
Mrs ******* - wife of main applicant

EMAIL 2

I received this reply from NationalityBiometrics@homeoffice.gov.uk on the 19th of December, 2022
Dear Dr ****,
Thank you for your email and I apologize for the delay in responding.
I can confirm that your application is in the process and that decisions on applications are usually made within six months.
As you may be aware, naturalization is not an automatic process, and we have to make a number of enquiries to ensure that applicants can satisfy the statutory requirements. Some of these enquiries are carried out by external agencies on our behalf and can sometimes take longer than six months to complete.
We will endeavor to conclude your application at the earliest opportunity and we will write to you again as soon as the necessary checks are complete. Please be assured that, as soon as we are in a position to reach a decision, you will be notified accordingly.
If you require any further information throughout the application process, please refer to our website:
www.gov.uk/browse/visas-immigration

EMAIL 3

I then emailed this on the 14th of April, 2023 to NationalityBiometrics@homeoffice.gov.uk and CT2caseworkenquiries@homeoffice.gov.uk:
Hello,
I am emailing you with regards to my wife's and my application for naturalization - I applied on the 14th of April, 2022 and is has been almost 1 year.
I work in the NHS as a doctor. I have not taken a single day off work as evidenced by my letters of employment attached in my application I submitted last year. I am about to become a consultant in the NHS and have worked tirelessly throughout this time and intend to continue working here and contributing to the community.
I have paid my taxes, worked continuously since I came here and have not broken any laws.
This is very stressful , as you can imagine given how long it is taking and how expensive the whole process is.
I would appreciate it if you could kindly assure me that my application has now been processed. I am more than happy to provide any documentation to help you reach a conclusion.
Many thanks,
Omar

EMAIL 4

On the 2nd of May I got an email from Home office atlas asking about confirmation about my place of birth and my wife's full name.

EMAIL 5

On the 18th of May, 2023, we received an email from our local council to attend a citizenship ceremony the following month.

THE REASON FOR DELAY :
As mentioned in the emails above, it is not clear what the reason behind this was. None of my referees were contacted and my employer was not contacted either. Some colleagues got their decisions within a few weeks, some in a few months and some are still waiting for theirs.
It has been discussed that at that time, the IDV application was introduced and the Home Office was not used to it hence there was a possible delay due to that. However whatever it was, it worked out in the end. Luckily, we can still travel abroad the ILR BRPs are valid for 3.5 years from the date of issue hence there is no need to worry about anything.
Nor does having citizenship affect your mortgage as according to mortgage advisors , ILR is enough ( People do get mortgages on works visas though )
