Brief history of Britain - by Dr Christopher Hay

A Brief History of Britain
This is a very brief history of the British Isles. It is written to (hopefully) give you a flavour of the rich history and how you can visit the sites today. Please get in touch if you have any questions or notice any mistakes/inconsistencies.

Part 1:

Ancient Britain:
6000 BC:
Sea levels rose as the latest 'Ice Age' receded, creating a channel of water between continental Europe and Britain. The people living on the Island where mainly hunter gatherers until between 5000-4000 BC when they began to Farm.
Ancient British people were a mixture of peoples as migration continued to the Island. From the start of the Bronze age (2500 BC) technology progressed and the population began to increase through to the Iron age before the Romans invaded.
The Ancient people did not leave written records but did leave significant archaeological sites. The most famous of these is a stone circle called Stonehenge (Salisbury, Wiltshire) which can still be visited today. They also built multiple hill-forts around the whole Island.

The people living in Britain were not united but lived in different tribes and fought between each other. Despite this they all shared a similar culture and a Pagan religion with Druids being important cultural figures. They are now called 'Celts'. This culture survived until the Roman Invasion. They did not leave any written accounts so much of what we know are from Roman records.

Ceasar's Invasion:

Julius Caesar, Rome's most famous general twice tried to invade Britain. He first landed in 55 BC but failed to get very far. He returned a year later (54 BC) with a larger force and did get all the way to River Thames but had to withdraw to suppress a rebellion in Gaul (France).
