My advice to IMGs who plan to come to the UK only to acquire a specialist skill - via MTI

This blog post is for those international medical graduates who plan to work in the UK on a MTI scheme.  I am going to go through this in the form of frequently asked questions (FAQs).  What is MTI? This stands for medical training initiative. This exists in every specialty now. The reason behind introducing this scheme was to meet the deficiency of specialty doctors in the NHS.  How does this work? These are the steps: 1. Search for the specialty you are interested in on Google - eg, "MTI in medicine UK", "MTI in gynae/obs UK" etc.  2. Read what the requirements are 3. Email the team if you have any queries.  4. Meet the outstanding requirements - ie English language requirements: https://www.gmc-uk.org/registration-and-licensing/join-the-register/before-you-apply/evidence-of-your-knowledge-of-english/using-your-ielts-certificate https://www.gmc-uk.org/registration-and-licensing/join-the-register/before-you-apply/evidence-of-your-knowledge-of-englis...

Applicants to Public Health will still be subject to the RLMT. See Annex D for more information on right to work." Anex D on page 50 explains it in more detail: "All medical practitioners are now on the Shortage Occupation List and are therefore exempt from the RLMT. All applicants to Public Health training, from both a med...

The points highlighted in blue are my personal opinions and advice. Please note that this is my personal interpretation based on my experience of 18 months as a non trainee SHO, core medical trainee for 2 years and now trainee registrar ( since August, 2019). Despite this, the information here may not be 100% accurate in which case, you should always talk to your supervisor or the recruitment team.  PAGE 1: This certificate can only be signed by a Consultant or equivalent.
